On our “New America Now: On Assignment” special series, Odette Keeley takes you to the Philippines, on a journey of her homeland's islands and provinces via the “Kulinarya [Culinary]” Food Trips. With its more than 7,100 islands, the Philippines boasts of both a bounty of natural resources and traditions and a diverse cuisine influenced by its trade and colonial past with flavors from Spain, Mexico, America, China and other Asian countries.
For the first part of our "On Assignment: Philippines" series, join Odette Keeley on this special journey of the Filipino palate, to the provinces of Laguna and Quezon, south of Manila, via the “Kulinarya Tagala [Southern Tagalog Culinary]” Tour. This full-length, "mini-documentary" also received support from CCT 168 Travel & Tours Corp. and Hotel H20 - Manila, Philippines.
The Philippines’ Department of Tourism recently launched these travel packages that it hopes will entice Filipino Americans and American tourists to explore the country through its regional cuisines.
Samples of these distinct Pinoy dishes that many Filipino Americans cook at home or crave, were recently showcased in San Francisco during the semi-finals of the “Kulinarya” or Filipino Culinary Showdown organized by the Philippine Consulate General of San Francisco during the 17th Annual Pistahan Parade and Festival at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco.
LATEST UPDATE: In celebration of Filipino-American History Month, the Philippine Consulate-General of San Francisco has just confirmed that it will now be holding the finals of its “Kulinarya̶ Showdown on December 4, 2010 at City View, 4th Floor of the Metreon, corner Mission and 4th Streets in San Francisco.
